Royal Perth Hospital was the first Hospital established in Western Australia, and is its largest teaching hospital. It is one of Australia's largest and busiest hospitals, with the second largest trauma workload in the country and one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Australasia. It has a distinguished international record in patient care, teaching and research, hosting Nobel Prize-winning research and world-leading experts in areas such as stroke, burns care and HIV research.

RPH employs about 7000 staff members (about 4,700 full-time equivalent), which includes world and national leaders in several areas, as well as more than 500 volunteers in the "Friends of RPH" service. The Hospital has on average 530 medical and surgical day and multi-day beds, with another 49 intensive/high dependency beds (with another 190 at the Shenton Park Campus). The Hospital treats about 73,000 in-patients a year, receives about 225,000 outpatient attendances a year, and has one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Australia, with more than 54,000 presentations a year.

RPH provides services to adults in all clinical fields (except obstetrics) and provides state-wide services in several areas, including: burns treatment, major trauma, heart and lung transplant, bone-marrow transplant, refractory epilepsy, haemophilia, spinal rehabilitation, head injury rehabilitation, and interventional neuroradiology.

RPH ICU

Royal Perth hospital Intensive Care Unit is the largest in WA. It is affiliated with the University of Western Australia Medical School and is heavily engaged in research.

RPH has 3 critical care pods: a dedicated 10 bed Surgical ICU, a General (medical and burns) 12 bed ICU, and an 9 bed High Dependency Area.

The ICU manages all facets of critical care medicine including trauma, burns, cardiothoracic surgery, heart and lung transplantation, extracorporeal life support, acute neurosurgery, major general surgery and all medical conditions requiring invasive monitoring and organ support therapies.

There is a complement of 20 junior medical staff including 6 senior registrars.

All ancillary professions are represented

RPH is the state trauma centre and the state burns centre.

The ICU admits over 2600 patients per year.
