ICU schedule fees have been historically low compared to other specialist craft groups. No consideration has been granted for the unusually high amount of after-hours and weekend activity required to be done by Intensivists. This is in contradistinction to it being factored into payments to other groups including anaesthetists. Medical benefits schedules have consistently failed to track increases in cost-of-living indices by about half the annual cost-of-living rises for greater than 20 years. This has generated the financial reality of gap payments. All of our group are fellows of the Intensive Care faculty of the Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. The Intensivists of the CCIWA group now look after 5 ICUs at three large metropolitan Perth hospitals. These are Royal Perth Hospital, The Mount Hospital and St John of God Hospital, Subiaco. We look after 52 ICU beds across the 3 hospitals and admit over 3000 patients per year. The CCIWA has set up a streamlined financial consent process for the convenience of patients. The new fee schedule is accessible on our website. The CCIWA Intensivists charge their standard fee schedule to all ICU patients not covered by DVA, ICWA, Worker’s comp or Lawrence agreement unless you are a private patient at Royal Perth Hospital where no out of pocket excess will apply. Our accountants (Stevens Lafferty Sellars) are also introducing an electronic on-line billing and accounting system to further streamline invoicing and payments. The Intensivists of the CCIWA are happy to maintain an agreement with HBF where HBF pays our professional fees directly.
